A common solution is what unites us. Since we all have a common disease, a common solution was in order, and still is to this day. The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous was designed in such a way that it is a workable solution for any alcoholic, given their willingness to work towards change and growth. Recovery from this deadly disease takes time and effort, it is not something that happens over night. It is a day by day process of ridding myself of old behaviors, and encouraging new behaviors. These new behaviors are based on the spiritual principles that are practiced in the Program. Developing and retaining these “good” behaviors is a start, accepting the idea of a Higher Power is but a beginning when it comes to working the Steps. The Twelve Steps tell me there is a way out of the insanity of drinking. I need to have a desire to quit drinking, maintain an open mind and become willing to do whatever is needed through the Program.
